ACTS OF LOVE AND DESPERATION
Spotlight on Opera presents an exciting evening of fully staged and costumed opera celebrating all the glory and despair of great love:
Act I of L'amico Fritz (Pietro Mascagni) introduces us to Fritz, a wealthy and beloved Alsatian landowner who bets his friend, Rabbi David, that he will never marry. Little does he reckon with the power of Beppe's bewitching Gypsy violin and the innocence and beauty of young Suzel, the daughter of one of his tenants! Full of beguiling melodies such as the Gypsy's song and Suzel's simple aria "Son pochi fiori", Act I of L'amico Fritz is a charming musical amuse bouche which will whet your appetite for the evening's fare.
The classic and tragic love story Dido and Aeneas (Henry Purcell), set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, tells the story of the beautiful and proud Queen Dido of Carthage, who falls in love with the hero Aeneas, only to have him torn from her by treacherous sorcery. This short one act opera, sung in English, has it all: sprightly airs, sailor's chanties, beautiful choruses, a storm scene, wicked witches, and one of the most gorgeously heart-wrenching arias of any era: "When I am laid in earth".
Tosca (Giacomo Puccini) is one of the greatest operatic love stories of all time. What could be more dramatic than a love triangle between a diva, her artist lover, and an evil chief of police, all set against a background of political intrigue? The evening concludes atop the Castel Sant'Angelo, with Puccini's haunting "E lucevan le stelle" and the final act of Tosca.
Saturday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 27 at 3 p.m.
United Christian Church, 3500 West Parmer Lane (at MoPac)
$10/general public; $7/students with ID. Tickets at the door; no children under 7 allowed.
