THE PLAYGROUND KING: A TOURING CHILDREN’S OPERA

Every summer, Spotlight on Opera brings free fun to greater Caddo Parrish via our touring kids’ opera. The Playground King is a fun, frolicking short opera that tunefully teaches the value of friendship while speaking out against bullying.

Each season we offer a masterwork in concert, honoring one of Shreveport’s greatest opera lovers and arts supporters, Mai Frances Doles, Jr. Faculty, students, and guest artists come together to perform a major work and raise money for our scholarship program, to ensure affordable quality training for the stars of tomorrow. In 2024, we offer Verdi’s tale of loyalty, love, and revenge: Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball). Sung in Italian with supertitles.

The Spotlight Stars of 2024 burst onto the Shreveport arts scene with a showcase of their very best arias. Grab this ground-floor opportunity to hear our talented young artists at the very beginning of the season, and marvel at their exponential growth over just five short but very intensive weeks!

WELCOME CONCERT

The Spotlight season kicks off with a free faculty concert welcoming our 2024 students to Shreveport and Spotlight on Opera. Our faculty and staff of professional singers strut their stuff in a fun, informal concert, followed by a reception. The general public is invited to join in and get to know your Spotlight family!

One night. Two acts from two very different operas. Each tells part of a love story … let your imagination fill in the rest. By showcasing Act I of La traviata and Act II of Carmen, our young artists enjoy a wide variety of opportunities, while you enjoy a double bill of the best opera has to offer. Sung in original languages with English supertitles. Please note: repertoire is subject to change depending on available talent.
