MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Our season concludes with the Mai Frances Doles Memorial Opera in Concert. Mai Frances was a treasured Shreveport arts supporter and opera lover. Madama Butterfly was her favorite opera and we are proud to present it in our very first concert with orchestra.

The entire company comes together to present this concert. Faculty members take the leading roles, while comprimario (supporting) roles are filled by students. Everyone sings chorus.

Puccini’s masterpiece beautifully tells the tragic story of a teenaged geisha who falls in love with an American naval officer, not understanding his cavalier attitude towards their “marriage” and her culture. Butterfly is faithful, even when her family disowns her and Pinkerton departs with false promises to return in the spring. When he returns three years later with an American wife, he is surprised to find that he left her with a child. Pinkerton realizes the consequences of his actions, but lacks the courage to face Butterfly. Ever the stronger person, Butterfly turns back to her culture chooses to die with honor because she can no longer live with honor.

Sung in Italian with supertitles
